Volunteer Information
Our society depends, to a great extent, on the willingness of people to help each other, define and respond to emerging problems, create and implement social programs, and give voice to issues that are important to us all.
We are grateful to our many wonderful volunteers who bring compassion, caring and commitment to support Glengarda Child and Family Services.
Glengarda has a variety of services that are made possible because of those who donate their time.
“Great opportunities to help others seldom come, but small ones surround us everyday”
Volunteer Programs
There are many volunteer opportunities available. Your commitment can range from a minimum of four hours per month to however many hours you choose. All volunteers are subject to an extensive screening process including a police background check. Volunteer opportunities are available during day treatment hours only, Monday – Friday 9:00-3:00. Below are a few programs that are helped made possible by Volunteers.
Pet Therapy
St. John Ambulance knows many people can benefit physically and emotionally from regular contact with the unconditional love of a dog. Research has shown that visits from Therapy Dogs help people reduce feelings of loneliness, depression and anxiety. St. John Ambulance is proud to provide Glengarda with the Therapy Dog Program. If interested in volunteering for this program please contact St. John Ambulance directly.
Breakfast Program
As a volunteer in this program your responsibility would be to assist the children in preparing their breakfast in the Glengarda kitchen. You will accompany 1-3 children at a time with their breakfast preparation, taking the opportunity to teach life skills. Glengarda would also like to offer a hot breakfast periodically throughout the year with the assistance of a volunteer. A commitment of 1-5 days or on an as needed basis would be appropriate.
Mentor Program
Children who spend time with a mentor gain confidence, acquire new skills and competencies, and develop an enhanced capacity to care for others. Being a mentor is about being a friend and having someone to look up to. It’s about hanging out, talking and sharing, playing games, doing crafts, baking. It’s about making one child feel very special. A commitment of one hour a week would be appropriate.
Classroom Volunteer
As a Classroom Volunteer your primary responsibility when with the children is to ensure your time spent with the child is one of a positive and nurturing time. You will be involved in roles that will be agreed upon between yourself and the treatment staff. Some of these roles may include assisting a child/ren with classroom work, reading, and staying on task. Other duties may include assisting/preparing art lessons, clerical work, and bulletin board preparation.
Special Opportunities
If you have a special skill or talent you would like to share with our children, let us know and we will try to find a way to incorporate it into our day treatment program. Ex. In the past we have had lunch hour track and field training, drama programs, music therapy, art club, soccer clinics……the choices are limitless.
