Our History
The name "Glengarda" stems from Lake Garda, which is situated in the town of Desenzano, Italy. This was the home of Angela Merici, founder of the Ursuline order. When the Ursulines purchased the original property in Windsor, they observed it to be low-lying land covered with many trees giving it a glen like appearance. Thus the name "Glengarda" was coined.
Glengarda's program opened in 1935, staffed by the Ursulines themselves with an initial enrolment of six children. By 1969, the Ursulines began to shift their focus from the developmentally handicapped to what were termed "in between" children, who were higher functioning but learning disabled and emotionally and behaviourally disturbed.
By 1970 the Ministry of Community & Social Services approved funding for the residential and day treatment programs. In 1977 the academic program affiliated itself with the Windsor Roman Catholic Separate School Board. In 2005, education services were consolidated with the Greater Essex County District School Board. In 2006, Glengarda began a relationship with the French Catholic Board in a Day Treatment capacity.
In 1993 an Advisory Board of Directors was formed. The residential program was officially closed in June 1994 and the Advisory Board was incorporated as the governing Board of Directors. Glengarda Child and Family Services has evolved today into a multi-service agency.
In September of 1997, the agency moved to the Western Campus of Windsor Regional Hospital and in January 2007 the agency moved into its current home.
